Why is the kettle boiling?
Answer # 1 - Because electricity flowing through the element excites the metal atoms, so raising their temperature. By means of thermal conduction this is carried to the water surrounding the element. This causes the water to gain enough energy to overcome its latent heat of vaporisation, producing steam.
Answer # 2 - My wife wanted a cup of tea.
Two different answers, one from a scientific frame of reference, the other from a personal frame of reference.
Both of these answers are true. One who gives answer #1 will not be lying if he doesn’t also give answer #2. And vice-versa.
